George Mason?!
So it looks like GMU is doing really well in the NCAA tourney this year. Well, being a Northern Virginia resident, I know that GMU just doesn’t get a lot of respect. It’s sort of the DMACC or the UNI of Virginia. Alot of its students are graduate “commuter” students who have day jobs and go there at night to get their masters in business or MIS. That’s why it surprised me when I saw they beat Michigan State and then North Carolina.
My wife is officially a student of GMU. She takes Orff classes there during the summer (hey, like I said, commuting graduate students!). That means it’s time to break out the school spirit! Woohoo! Go Patriots!
And right now, I’m sitting only 2 miles away from their main campus! I can feel the excitement!
Some interesting GMU facts:
- GMU has four other campuses in Arlington, Loudon County, and in Prince William County, and in the United Arab Emirates.
- GMU actually used to be an extension of the University of Virginia until the 70s.
- One of my favorite shows on basic cable is a show on GMU’s public access channel where one of their Geography professors talks about the history and geography of Virginia. His website is here.
- George Mason University was named after - you guessed it - George Mason, the “Father of the Bill of Rights” and original owner of Gunston Hall.
